citytext

These photos don't quite qualify as street text, coming from various green ways around Manchester, but they certainly belong to the city.

oh Matt!

thanx for the fagpack picture, i'm obsessed w/ cigarettes & their packaging.

especially the discarded trampled packs as the one you photo'd, alas, those damn govt. warning labels are hideous.

i was lucky onna roadtrip once to be driving thru Indiana & notice a tobacco-shop that had green Lucky Strike posters in their windows, it turned out to be the 50th year anniversary of the "Lucky Strike goes to war" campaign, which they had to do during WW2 due to demand for green ink -- i've always hadda soft spot for the green Luckies, like a Spitfire,

but Gitanes Blondes are my fave factory rolled smoke & their gypsy woman is a great logo.

and the Craven "A" black-cat is great as well, i used to live inna very diversified community & there was a little Vietnamese grocery store that carried good tobacco (Vietnamese people have a refined taste in cigarettes, possibly a Gallic influence from French colonialism?), but i learned the lingo & enjoyed going to the shop & saying " gimme a packa black-cats"

: )

I haven't seen any for a while, but in the right areas of Manchester you'll frequently find what I believe are illegally imported Chinese cigarettes. I say illegally because they lack the huge government health warnings that I think are required if the cigarettes are intended for sale. These packs are generally green or orange, with often surprisingly attractive airbrushed paintings or other drawn images on the front. If I see any while I have my camera I will record them.

This one was obviously more about the text, so it's a shame it's out of focus really - oh well.
