sound poetry cd's - august + beyond

Still uncertain what will be on August's CD-R of sound poetry. After three sessions and more than six hours there are a lot of field recordings and fragments, and just over half an hour's worth of tracks that seem to just hang, barely changing for their duration. They're good enough to release but not what I intended before or even during recording.

The intention was not to do anything that might be described as tasteful but rather to throw a lot of contrasting elements together roughly with vocal sounds. There are a lot of contrasting elements but they're fairly well integrated and there's not much voice present. It may have been a mistake using the LoopStation. On the positive side I worked out how to use it in conjunction with the mixing desk without getting a sudden leap in volume once the loop activates, but on the minus side it tends to smooth out awkward joints between different sound sources. Those awkward joints were really meant to be the point.

Part of the problem may be that recent sound pieces have moved into improvisation using a range of sound sources with the intention of being subtle and slow to develop. This has meant the voice has been relegated simply to drones and breath while the harsher, trickier and frankly more embarassing to execute vocal experiments from last year through to around April this year have been set aside.

For various reasons there was no time to compose or write anything for August. So it is likely that the static pieces already recorded will be what gets released this month. I have begun to write something new starting from the word rain but the chances are that will end up being the basis of September's CD-R. In which case September and October are likely to be quite choppy sounding.

Despite having found the last couple of CD-Rs difficult to finish on time to a standard I'm happy with it woul be interesting to carry on this programme of releases through 2010 - perhaps one every other month. If there are six releases in 2010 then sound poetry will probably alternate with pieces conceived as soundtracks to already existing films. There are already several ideas written down for soundtracks to accompany some of my favourite films. The advangtage of this is that it would forcibly separate the soundscape elements that have crept in this year from the sound poetry, allowing me to work on vocal technique and writing primarily for the voice. More news as these ideas solidify.
