early early drafts

Launched on what I hope is going to be a long and complex new poem - the intention is to draw in material from as long ago as 1996, and to incorporate both visual and sound elements. At present some or none of what you see may get used. The piece, or perhaps just this section is currently called Anglophile, but again it's pretty up in the air.

The most obvious near-quote is from Dylan, but Harry Partch, Derek Jarman, Woody Guthrie, T S Eliot (obviously), Victor Segalen and a couple of others are or soon will be alluded to. First the current draft of the opening as it stands, then the edits so far. I won't be detailing every step of the journey, I just thought it might be interesting to have a look:

Anglophile

The ragmen draw circles. Cinema-curtain evening sun
call ‘Boo!’ to dizzy boys below
kiss in the quarry’s arms.
Winter rain soaked trousers at the junction car
bluzzbannees blows and holds him up.

...and the stages to get there

Anglophile

The ragmen draw circles call ‘Boo’ to dizzy boys craning at them who kiss in the arms of a quarry curtained with evening red sun

The ragmen draw circles they ride across the country call ‘Boo’ to dizzy boys they sweep across below and kiss in a quarry’s arms cinema curtained evening red sun

The ragmen draw circles
they don’t need the talk
they ride across the country
call ‘Boo!’ to dizzy boys below.
In cinema-curtained evening sun
kiss in the quarry’s arms.

And this is all the past now paint circles on the wall, stop at the corner in the rain, car bluzzbannees only wind not even damp but it holds you up from going home. Oranges and the decks below.
