palm oil deforestation

People all over social media in the UK have been lovebombing a banned Christmas advert, even signing at least one petition to undo the decision.

It's a nice, if blunt, animation about deforestation to make way for palm oil. But it's also a Christmas advert for a frozen foods supermarket that ends with their logo. And in all the shares and petitions it's their name that gets mentioned again and again.

Greenpeace, their partners on the ad get an occasional mention, but it's the supermarket's name on every damn story.

There might be a mention of the cute animated baby orangutan, called Rang-Tan, but again it's the supermarket that gets most of the feels and the credit for 'doing the right thing'.

I'm pretty sure I have yet to see any mention in the links, petitions, shares and likes of palm oil, deforestation, the rainforests or climate change. And certainly nothing at all about rapacious capitalism. But I can't escape the name of the supermarket.

Here's a link to the video on Greenpeace's site which doesn't end with the shop's logo meaning you can share it with less guilt, and which has a link to more information and a petition to ask big brands to stop using palm oil.

And here are some more links with information and actions you can take:

Finally, here's an image I drew with a version of my argument above, and (handwritten) copies of the URLs you can go to. Feel free to share the picture without attribution.

Edit: Actually, here's a video on these kind of short-film Christmas ads that's funnier than anything I've written. Though admittedly the ad in question doesn't have a charity tie-in:
