manchester literature festival 09 - *sigh*

I was going to advertise the most interesting events coming up during the Manchester Literature Festival, but reading through the brochure I could feel my enthusiasm for literature dying. There are some things and stuff happening but it's pretty conservative all round.

If you absolutely insist on going then the following might be of interest:

Monday October 12, 18:30 Will Self interviews Martin Amis at The Martin Harris Centre. It costs £5 (£3 concessions) but you can always chuck bread rolls at Amis and him why he's so afraid of Muslims. Award yourself 10 points every time he mentions Islamofascism.

Sunday October 18, 15:00 Four writers with books out from Salt at the Whitworth Art Gallery - Elizabeth Baines, Robert Graham, Mark Illis & John Siddique. This one's free but they advise you to book in advance. Should be interesting.

Monday October 19, 18:30 Two writers discuss Spanish graphic fiction at Instituto Cervantes. I haven't heard of either Dario Adanti or Paco Roca Read but this looks like it could be fascinating. Tickets are free but the usual advice is to book in advance.

However, at 19:30 the same day, Monday October 19 Matthew Welton with Jacob Polley and Adelle Stripe will perform at a special There's No Point Being Friends etc. at Matt & Phreds Jazz Club. This one's £3 but it's still probably wise to book now if you want to go.

Tuesday October 20, 13:00 Rainy City Stories have a peripatetic event starting from Urbis called Walking In The Rain. It's £5 (£3 concessions). Book your sickie now if you want to go on this one. No idea why this is a weekday, it would surely make more sense on the weekend. There will also be a podcast for anyone stuck in work but desperate to know what goes on - presumably see Rainy City Stories for details.

The same day Tuesday October 20, at the more civilised time of 18:00-19:30 there's a face to face event with Jimmy McGovern at Cornerhouse. Tickets are free, limited to a maximum of two per person, and can be reserved on a first come first served basis by emailing writersroom.events@bbc.co.uk with Jimmy McGovern in the subject header.

Wendesday October 21, 19:00 The newly un-scummy Band on the Wall is the venue for the Manchester Blog Awards. Tickets only £4 (but still £3 concessions). I've never been to one of these events but I'm sure it's a lot of fun.

Details on all the above and the many other events that look much more dreary at www.manchesterliteraturefestival.co.uk

There are several other poetry things which mostly look a bit dull. At least one has something or other to do with the Forward prize. Personally I'm finding it hard to get enthusiastic about even the more interesting events I've pulled out. Maybe I'll feel more positive as the festival gets closer.
