filmonik

Since santiago is lazy you haven't hitherto been told about filmonik, which is a bit of disgrace since santiago's friends have shown films there. For those of you who don't know filmonik is a kind of 'open-mic' night for filmmakers held monthly in Manchester. They explain it far more elegantly and with pictures at their website. Go check it out.

Anyhoo, santiago showed a piece called vagabond (with truly ropy sound) at the most recent screening where it seemed to go down well amongst all the far more professional offerings available. The most successful pieces were probably the animated shorts, partly because they seemed to have sharper editing than the live action shorts. Vagabond was no exception as a couple of the edits dragged on scenes that should have been close to subliminal. Nonetheless, slightly slurred edits and imperfect sound aside, vagabond will be linked up here shortly.

As with previous videos there'll be a steep drop in quality required. The film was shot and edited in NTSC with a frame rate of just under 30 frames a second, but when it's converted to Quicktime for the video hosting service that gets rendered down to 15 frames a second. Fascinating stuff huh?

But santiago's contribution aside, all the filmonik nights he's attended have been a lot of fun. Probably because he's with friends, and usually they have something excellent to show. In fact some pieces are available online elsewhere and it might be good to link to them from here, keep an eye out. Bottom line, it was a good night, and if you're in Manchester for the next one then you should come along. Bring a film or don't. In some ways you enjoy the evening more at any kind of open-mic if you're just watching. You have no particular investment in it that way, and you can just sit back and relax.

Also at the weekend a copy of Other Poetry arrived. This has a piece by santiago in under the title Untitled Piece, which some of you may be familiar with. More information on Other Poetry at their website, along with past poems and subscription details (£13 for three issues). Give them a look, there's some good pieces in the magazine from flicking through it. At present the website still seems to be featuring the previous issue (#28) as current, but that may change shortly.
