new film news
Ok so there's supposed to be a hiatus from creating but having freaked out after an evening with friends cos there were too many people around and walked home I suddenly had an idea for a short film that very quickly became many ideas. So since Sunday night the basic outline's been fixed, all the vocal audio recorded, most of the props gathered, bought and constructed, and around half the nightmare images filmed. No editing's been done and no 'everyday life' footage has been shot.
Without giving anything away a voiceover tells the story of a relationship that's come to an end by following through a pet name that one partner had for the other. This will run over images of domestic and street scenes, building up a picture of normality, interspersed with disruptive and nightmarish images set in the narrator's flat. The intention is to have at least a rough edit in about 10 days time. Unfortunately it may not get posted here at all. The current hosting service can't have anything over three minutes, certainly not in the basic free package, and this film is likely to be a couple of minutes longer than that.
Bah. This broadcast is interrupted to let you know that santiago's been rejected from the MA programme in creative writing that he wanted to join. Despite being enormously annoyed by this there'll be no slagging of the organisation or individuals involved. The course and institution will therefore remain anonymous, unless santiago applies again and gets in as part of a subsequent intake.
The next step now is to determine whether it is worth reapplying, looking again at other creative writing options, and considering an arts foundation with the intention of accessing other arts courses where I can explore film, photography and other visual media. You'll be kept in touch with any developments. Reasons why santiago is unsuitable for the course have been asked for, and when the answer comes it may be passed on to you. Ok, back to the film stuff.
Apart from the length of the film making it less easy to post here there may be another option to get it seen, which as usual you'll be told about if it happens, but won't be for some time. Anyway friends are on board to help with, and the problematic areas are beginning to be sorted out. Up until yesterday it seemed like the domestic/normal life segments were less vividly realised than the nightmarish bits. But a solution was figured out yesterday, which is a bit of an unconcious rip-off of Gus Van Sant and a couple of others.
One of the things that's quite pleasing so far is that there seems to be the beginning of a distinct 'voice', and something which is separate from photography, not simply moving stills as it were. Things are being shown, or going to be shown, by way of metaphor or at least to contribute to the mood and atmosphere. Not to be taken as literal. It's not unique of course, but still pretty pleasing nontheless having come organically out of the proccess.
As the project gets completed and plans for it firm up there'll be further bulletins. See you soon.
