brief note on voices lps

Ouch! Actually I'm not sure what the implications are for the price of used but playable records in good condition. But I just found the first one of the six lps released by Argo records accompanying Geoffrey Summerfield's Voices anthology series (from Penguin Education) for sale online in mint condition.

This single lp, albeit still wrapped and in mint condition, is just shy of $70. It suggests that the whole set of lps in good condition is likely to be pretty pricey, even if I can track them down. But I hadn't planned to think about buying the lps until next year anyway.

Although I'd be happy to track down mp3s of the records I have to say that from the images of the record and insert it looks like they were produced with the same level of care as the books.

Also the list of tracks (divided into 'bands') looks very tasty. Band one of side one starts with:

a Noises - the auditory equivalent of riddling. The noises are, in order, a piano neing thrown out of a window, a knife being sharpened and (from Syria) a Bedouin grinding coffee with pestle and mortar.

Other bands feature folk song from around the world, settings of poetry, children's rhymes, readings of poems, an extract from Peter Grimes, a shepherd playing a pipe, and church bells.

The selection appears to have been edited by Geoffrey Summerfield with help from Harley Usill, the founder of Argo Records, and John Gilbert.

Yes, this anthology is very alluring. Be nice to see it reissued, or failing that, a good rip by someone.
